54 Vocal Warm Up Exercises
07 Power Posing
34 Tongue Twisters – helps you to stop being nervous / calm your nerves
47 It’s Not About You: Shift your mind away from your self-interests and focus on helping people
19 Tip #1. Ask rhetorical questions (they are not meant to be answered by the audience) *the more thought provoking, the more powerful they become. It engages with the audience; it makes them think about the answer during your talk. Try to touch on a bigger issue/feeling; a theme; a pain point
Ex: Why is it that some designers are worth more than others? What is the difference between what this guy does and what they do? What is the key to his success?
15 Tip #2. When you are preparing your talk, start at the end. *What is the key idea that you want everybody to walk away with? Focus your deck around this. Organize your thoughts for your talk. Don’t lose your way through your argument,
37 Organize your thoughts before you speak. Figure out the actions that you want people to take.
38 Tip #3. Remove filler words of um, so, like, or you know. Use the “burst” technique instead: Think about what you want to say first (the entire sentence), and then speak. Be okay with the silence in between the words. Speak slower, more methodically, with more intention.
29 The Burst Technique: take time to think about what you want to say. Speak with greater intention.
35 Tip #4. Key idea story exercise. Give the point. It sounds prescriptive, factual, and emphatic. And when you give the key idea, cite the source (because sometimes the audience isn’t ready to accept it). Use effective storytelling. Or give your audience something to do
56 Tip #5. Have a catchphrase: “Start with why.” Distill your entire talk down to one sentence. More examples of catchphrases: “Practice safe design. Use a concept.” “Vulnerability is the birthplace of innovation, creativity, and change.”
20 What do you do to increase your vocabulary? *Read this book: The Business of Expertise
14 When you study and fold things into your conversation
09 Hang around smarter people
10 Dial-up and down your vocabulary based on the audience you are
00 The more vivid and strange the story you craft around something, the better you are able to remember and retain it.
